How to Beat the Summer Heat

Summer isn’t officially here until June 21, and that's also the longest day of the year. Go figure. But, in some parts of the country the heat and humidity is already sweltering. Since the temperatures will only keep rising until we hit the fall months, we have some tips to help you beat the summer heat.

PULL YOUR HAIR UP

This seems simple enough. Few things annoy me more than sweaty hair sticking to my neck. So up it goes! We wanted to share some of our favorite styles for PONY-O ponytail holders in summer. Number 1 is the High Ponytail, of course!

STAY HYDRATED

Seems like a no-brainer. Right? Not for a lot of people. Staying hydrated activates your body’s built-in cooling mechanism: sweat. When your body doesn’t get enough fluids, in hot temperatures especially, it becomes DE-hydrated, leading to weakness, fatigue, and sometimes more serious illnesses. So be sure to replenish by following the 8 by 8 rule: drink eight 8 ounce glasses of water per day. Have an ice chest handy? Freeze some bottled water the night before. Not only will they help keep your ice chest cold, you’ll have lots of cold water on hand.

Drinking coconut water is also a great way to hydrate. Coconut water is refreshing, and has many beneficial vitamins, minerals and electrolytes and is lower in sugar than popular sports drinks. It’s a great choice to re-energize your body during those hot summer days.

EAT FOODS HIGH IN WATER CONTENT

Hydrate even more by eating foods high in water content, like watermelon, cantaloupe, peaches, pineapple, cucumber, celery and strawberries. Sounds like a yummy summer fruit salad just waiting to happen! Add some cucumber to your water for an even more refreshing treat.

AVOID THE SUN BETWEEN 11AM and 2PM

This is when sun exposure is at its strongest point, especially at high noon. UV exposure is also most hazardous at this time. Growing up in the desert of New Mexico, I learned this lesson at an early age. It's the perfect time of day to find a nice shady spot to relax (and hydrate) or take your lunch break in an air conditioned restaurant.

WEAR A HAT & SUNGLASSES

Wearing a hat can help prevent sunburn and regulate your body temperature. A wide brim hat is the best option (think carrying around your own shade), but a ball cap will also work! You could also throw an umbrella in your bag/backpack. It's a lightweight solution for instant shade.

And don’t forget sunglasses to protect your eyes from sunburn. Yes, that’s a thing! The official name is photokeratitis, and it can cause permanent damage to your eyes.

DRESS APPROPRIATELY

Wear loose, lightly colored clothing. Tight clothing restricts circulation and traps body heat. Loose fabrics allow air to flow across your skin. Natural fabrics such as cotton, linen or silk are the best options since they allow the skin to breathe. Rayon can also help combat body heat. Less is more when it comes to summer clothing.

EAT A POPSICLE/SNOW CONE

We saved the best for last! Short of jumping in the pool, eating a popsicle or snow cone on a hot summer day was the best way to cool down when we were kids! And who doesn’t love a yummy, icy popsicle or snow cone? I hear the Blue Coconut calling my name...
