Ponytails and Hairstyles For Girls With Curly Hair

Whenever we see girls with curly hair we can’t help but envy them because they are blessed with such volume in their locks. Their hair never look boring and flat but hey, we never know what goes on behind closed doors. We’ll never know how much time it takes for them to get ready in the morning just to tame those gorgeous wild curls!

The hair industry’s take on curly hair

Hair care is given emphasis now just like skin care. We witness the hair industry coming out with a wide variety of innovative products with different companies introducing products for each hair type here and there. For curly hair, there are stuff to hydrate dry hair or to reduce oil, products to smoothen the curls or make it more define, products to help your ringlets stay in place and products to make them look more disheveled. It’s insane how they have every product that literally caters to your hair preference! It’s safe to say that the industry, especially those who are pro natural hair care, is booming now that more and more women are embracing and flaunting their natural hair. Love that!

However, before adding those products to your cart, let’s first talk about the importance of knowing what type of curls you have. Understanding the science behind your mane will not only help you save a lot of money from buying products that will be ineffective on your hair, it will also help you come up with ways on how you can style your curls better.

Curly hair - the basics

The type of the curl you have is identified by your hair follicle. If your hair follicle is more on the elliptical shape it means that you have much more curlier hair while the rounder follicle suggests straighter hair. Your curl pattern depends on disulfide bonds sandwiched between the proteins of the hair located in your hair shaft and the higher the number of links, the curlier the hair. Obviously, if the number of links is lower, it means a much more straighter hair. Curl patterns indicate how curly your locks are. It can be vary from wavy to kinky coily curls and you can have more than one type of pattern! Your textured curls could be either or both wavy, curly, or coily.

Types of curly hair

All in all there are 4 types of curly hair, the first type is the straight hair so there is no explanation needed for that at all. Now, let’s go ahead and delve into the remaining three types:

  • Wavy

If your hair is somewhere between straight and curly, you fall under the second type which is wavy. This type of hair starts flat at the roots and develops an alternating wide and loose waves and tends to crimp and frizz a lot more. If this helps, let’s discuss its subcategories:

Wavy hair is not that straight, but the waves are not fully defined either, these waves are considered as type 2A. This type is easier to manage and style and is less stubborn than the other two types. The next one is type 2B, although flat and straight at the roots, it has more defined waves half-way through the hair. This type is where it becomes more difficult to style compared to the first one. The last wavy type is Type 2C, if you could picture Taylor Swift’s infamous curls during her ‘Fearless’ era, it’s pretty similar to that. Here, the waves start from the roots until the ends with thicker and frizzier texture.

  • Curly

Onto the next type we go. This one has more noticeable and more defined S-shaped curls (it embodies our common notion of what ‘curly’ hair looks like). This is where ‘curls-curls’ are prevalent and more visible and this curls are a lot more prone to damage and frizz. So it’s a must for girls who have this curl pattern to take good care of their locks more. Like the wavy hair, it also have several classifications which fall under it:

We begin with the 3A curls, these are big, rather loose, pretty good size (not too tight and not too small) curls.  3B curls, on the other note, has grittier texture and more distinct curls with each curls about the size of a bullet of  your favorite lipstick. The last type is most commonly known as the corkscrew curls with circumference similar to a pencil. It is naturally the coarsest of all types that fall under the curly type.

  • Coiled or Kinky

Now that we’re at the last type, we’re pretty sure you can already picture what these curls look like— Just think about Beyonce’s gorgeous natural afro mane. These curls are fine, full of texture and frail hence the most prone to breakage. Pattern varies between tight S-shaped to Z-shaped curls. Obviously, this type is extremely curly it aches for loads of moisture. Here are the classifications of coiled or kinky curls:

4A coils are considerably tighter in circumference and a lot more dense. 4B, resembles a precise Z-shaped coils like Willow Smith’s. Since its strands are so fine and coarse, these coils have a high possibility of shrinking its actual length. The last one is so coiled it resembles the spring in a pen!
