Back for its 23 year, Coachella kicks off the music festival season April 10-12 and April 17-19 at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California The giant annual festival has grown tremendously since its first year in 1999 and it’s now wayyy more than just a weekend to listen to good music.
HOW DID COACHELLA START?
It all started in 1993, when grunge royalty Pearl Jam got in a fight with Ticketmaster over their service fees, leading them to look into alternate venues for their Vs tour. The band ended up performing at the Empire Polo Grounds in Indio, CA, which is where the festival is still held today. Building on their success, the very first Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival began in 1999.
IS IT ONLY MUSIC?
Dozens of bands continuously play on five main stages over two three-day weekends in April. You can also enjoy art installations, gourmet and not-so-gourmet food, dance parties, games, a vintage market, a record shop, the iconic Ferris wheel, and of course, fashion.
Coachella is synonymous with the re-emergence of the bohemian look made popular at Woodstock in the 1960's, and the fashion trend has made its way to other festivals around the world. With the popularity of Coachella + Instagram, people have started wearing more eye-catching outfits, hoping to be seen and photographed for a chance to be the next influencer...almost as important as seeing their favorite music acts in person.
